Emirates plane crash-lands with 300 aboard; 1 firefighter

An Emirates airline flight traveling from India to Dubai crash-landed at Dubai’s primary airport on Wednesday, with all 300 individuals on board surviving, according to the airline.

One firefighter lost his life while responding to the incident, as stated by the airline’s chairman and CEO. Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum also reported that 10 individuals were hospitalized following the event at Dubai International Airport.

Emirates confirmed that the 282 passengers and 18 crew members were safe and accounted for after the incident, although no further details regarding the occurrence were provided

There were indications of wind shear, or a sudden downdraft, at the airport during the aircraft’s descent, but it remained uncertain whether this had any impact on the situation, as noted by the airline’s CEO later on.

Dubai-based Emirates, recognized as the largest airline in the Middle East, reported that the crash-landing took place at 12:45 p.m. local time as Flight EK521 was approaching from the southern Indian city of Thiruvananthapuram.

Social media users reported seeing smoke at the site, and images depicted a plane ablaze on the airport’s runway.

A passenger, Iype Vallikadan, mentioned that the pilot had informed them of an issue with the landing gear as the aircraft approached Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, and that an emergency landing would be executed, according to the Associated Press.

Following the landing, the cabin crew opened all emergency exits, and the evacuation of all individuals was completed within minutes, as reported by the news agency.

Among the passengers were six U.S. citizens, as stated by the airline. Additionally, there were 226 individuals from India, 24 from Britain, 11 from the Emirates, six from Saudi Arabia, five from Turkey, and four from Ireland.

Two individuals each hailed from Australia, Brazil, Germany, Malaysia, and Thailand, while one each came from Croatia, Egypt, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lebanon, the Philippines, South Africa, Switzerland, and Tunisia

Boeing, the American aircraft manufacturer, announced that a technical team is ready to assist in the investigation alongside the National Transportation Safety Board.

Saif Mohamed Al Suwaidi, the director general of Dubai’s General Civil Aviation Authority, tweeted that the agency has activated the investigation team collaborating with Emirates Airlines and Dubai Airport. He stated, “Our primary concern at this moment is the safety and well-being of all passengers and cabin crew.”

Founded in 1985, Emirates has established a strong safety record. Dubai International Airport is the busiest in the region, accommodating 78 million passengers last year.

The airport reported that other flights experienced delays of approximately six hours and operations resumed shortly before 7 p.m. local time.

Among other alleged acts of deprivation, The Post reported that Rubin has been accused of “beat[ing a woman’s] breasts so badly that her right implant flipped” — an injury so severe that, according to court documents, her “plastic surgeon was not even willing to operate on her breasts.”

Prosecutors allege Rubin paid women up to $5,000 for BDSM encounters. However, several women contend they never consented to the level of violence and humiliation they say he carried out during those sessions.

Another plaintiff claims that, while Rubin allegedly had her bound in his ‘dungeon,’ he told her “I’m going to rape you like I rape my daughter” and then, according to the complaint, forced sex on her against her will.

“Rubin has three children with his estranged wife, including at least one daughter,” The Post added.

“I thought he was a nice guy. He was a nebbishy Jewish guy and totally normal. I was surprised to hear about him having that apartment [with a sex dungeon],” a trader who worked with Rubin at Soros Fund Management, created by billionaire investor George Soros, told The Post.

“As alleged, the defendants used Rubin’s wealth to mislead and recruit women to engage in commercial sex acts, where Rubin then tortured women beyond their consent, causing lasting physical and/or psychological pain, and in some cases physical injuries,” Joseph Nocella Jr., United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York said in the DOJ release.

“Today’s arrests show that no one who engages in sex trafficking, in this case in luxury hotels and a penthouse apartment that featured a so-called sex ‘dungeon,’ is above the law, and that they will be brought to justice. Human beings are not chattel to be exploited for sex and sadistically abused, and anyone who thinks otherwise can expect to find themselves in handcuffs and facing federal prosecution like these defendants,” he added.

“For many years, Howard Rubin and Jennifer Powers allegedly spent at least one million dollars to finance the commercial sexual torture of multiple women via a national trafficking network. The defendants allegedly exploited Rubin’s status to ensnare their prospective victims and forced them to endure unthinkable physical trauma before silencing any outcries with threats of legal recourse,” stated FBI Assistant Director in Charge Christopher G. Raia.

“The FBI will continue to apprehend any trafficker who sexually abuses others for twisted gratification,” he added.

“This was not a one-man show. While Rubin dehumanized these women with abhorrent sexual acts, Powers is alleged to have run the day-to-day operations of the enterprise and got paid generously for her efforts,” said Harry T. Chavis, Jr., IRS investigative special agent in charge.

Three beachgoers dead after sea mines wash up on beach and explode at popular tourist spot

Three beachgoers were killed after sea mines washed up too close to Zatoka Beach, near a popular tourist attraction in the city of Odesa, southern Ukraine.

The Black Sea has always been a favourite holiday spot in Ukraine, but many beaches have been closed for safety reasons after Russia’s full-scale invasion, with officials warning holidaymakers to stay out of prohibited waters.

According to local reports, the mines, which killed two men and a woman who were swimming in areas prohibited for recreation, exploded approximately 165ft from shore.

“All of them have been killed by explosive devices while swimming in areas prohibited for recreation,” regional governor Oleh Kiper said.

“This once again proves that being in unchecked waters is fatally dangerous. Each of them has undergone a comprehensive inspection — the presence of shelters, the absence of mine danger both on land and in water.”

After losing a significant part of its navy early in the war, Russia has been laying sea mines in the Black Sea to hit Ukrainian vessels. Ukraine, in turn, has scattered its own mines to block any Russian attempts at landing troops along the coast. The mines can be dislodged by strong currents, heavy rainfall, and shifting tides, and have been known to drift toward the shoreline.

Now, the Black Sea — which borders both countries — is one of the most hazardous places to swim.

In addition to the threat of mines, unexploded mortars and aerial bombs have also been found in the water, making it a danger zone for tourists, swimmers, and beachgoers.

According to the BBC, the identities of the three people who tragically lost their lives haven’t been identified.

“It has been previously determined that three vacationers – a woman and two men – died while swimming as a result of two explosions of unknown objects. The identities of the deceased are being established,” the police report stated, as per the

BBC.
